Neuropsychological Evaluations
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of an individual's cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning, with a specific focus on understanding the relationship between brain functioning and behavior. It involves the use of standardized tests and procedures to measure various aspects of cognitive abilities, such as attention, memory, language, perception, problem-solving, and motor skills.
These assessments are often recommended when there are concerns about an individual's cognitive functioning, such as following a brain injury, stroke, or neurological illness, or when there are suspected difficulties in learning, attention, or other cognitive domains.
The results of a neuropsychological assessment help clinicians understand an individual's strengths and weaknesses in various cognitive domains, identify any cognitive impairments or deficits, and make recommendations for interventions, treatments, or accommodations to support the individual's cognitive functioning and overall well-being. These assessments are valuable tools in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as mild cognitive impairment, dementia, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other neurological or psychiatric disorders.
What to expect
During a neuropsychological assessment, the clinician will gather information about the individual's medical history, conduct a structured interview with the patient and often a family member or friend, and administer a battery of standardized tests. These tests may include tasks such as recalling and recognizing information, solving puzzles, organizing and planning activities, and responding to visual or auditory stimuli. The assessment may also include measures of mood, personality, and behavioral functioning.
Depending on the purpose of the evaluation, we typically schedule appointments for either a half day (4 hour block) or full day evaluation (8 hour block).

I formally contract with Medicare. If you have a PPO plan from a non-Medicare insurance company, you may still be eligible to receive partial or full reimbursement for a neuropsychological evaluation. While I cannot be responsible for collecting payment from your insurance company directly, I can provide you with the necessary information to submit to your insurance company to facilitate the reimbursement process.
In general, you should be prepared for the possibility that your insurance company will reimburse you no more than 50% of the fee they allow for a neuropsychological or psychological evaluation. However, some policies pay 80–100% of charges. I strongly recommend that you speak directly to a representative of your insurance company to confirm the nature of your coverage for the neuropsychological evaluation.
